Wall Street Toastmaster Guests,
There are so many ways in which public speaking skills come in handy. Whether you want to be able to read bedtime stories to your children in a more animated manner, tell a joke in a circle of your friends without scrambling the punchline, give a speech at a conference or a presentation at work, these skills will make the experience more rich, enjoyable, and rewarding. Whether you are facing a classroom of forty teenagers or four hundred professionals, your knees will not shake, because the feeling will be very similar to that of facing a room full of your fellow Toastmasters. With your newly acquired confidence, you may want to undertake projects you have shunned in the past. Whatever brings you to Toastmasters, our club will provide an encouraging and constructive atmosphere for you to polish your public speaking skills.
These skills are a matter of practice, of learning from constructive feedback, and gradually perfecting various aspects of your presentations. Within the framework of Toastmasters meeting, it is up to you to decide how you want to play this game. As the sequence of your speeches progresses, you will master the organization of material and learn to speak to the point. You will be able to tailor the structure and content of your speech to its stated purpose, be it to tell a story, to inspire action, or to promote a product. But the goal of your speech and its content are only part of the story! Non-verbal communication is extremely important. While delivering your speeches at Toastmasters, you will focus on vocal variety, gestures, your overall body language, and eye contact with the audience.
The manner of public speaking keeps changing with times. What audiences admired in an orator only 50 years ago would leave them puzzled, bored, and perhaps laughing today. From a more removed, formal, and pompous style of the past, modern address evolved into a democratic conversation with the audience, usage of more colloquial language, with shorted sentences accounting for attention span that shrunk. In keeping up with the times, you will explore the various aspects of public speaking through the monthly reviews of Toastmasters magazines presented by your fellow members or perhaps you.
For most people, fear, lack of experience and negative feedback are the roadblocks to great public speaking. Our club has a mentorship program that offers coaching of those who require help by more experienced speakers. Armed with all the necessary tools and attributes to make your public speaking journey successful, and with the help of your fellow Toastmasters, you will overcome these obstacles and discover the hidden Cicero within you.
Victoria Shenderovich, President
